5I thought there was no way the first three books in Lowry's series could be outdone, but "Son" succeeds brilliantly. Characters from all three previous books are drawn together in a story that begins seemingly out of nowhere with a girl, chosen as a child-bearer or Vessel, being turned out of her place in the community for something she has no control over. In her new position, she begins to discover things about her world that are very wrong. Rather than accept them and submit to them, she finds her child and runs away. In the pages that follow, we follow her as she discovers love, self-forgiveness, and, although it seems almost impossible, her family. Readers had to wait years for this book, and it was well worth the wait! I only wish that Lowry had another volume of surprises for us beyond "Son," but ...
