5	Lowry has written an incredibly moving account of the Jews in World War II Denmark. Annemarie Johansen worries what might happen to her Jewish friend, Ellen Rosen, as the Nazis capture and relocate all Jews. During this time, Annemarie learns about the power of evil, the strength of family, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Lowry does a masterful job of showing how Annemarie grows up before our very eyes and how she interacts with her little sister Kirsti, her friend Ellen, and the ever present Nazi officers. Annemarie learns several lessons throughout the book that she'll never forget. 2011-08-16
4	This book expertly shows how the perspective of a child is widened, often by difficult circumstances. It also poses questions to all readers: What would you do if one of your friends was labeled part of a group that was systematically being persecuted by authorities? If someone in your family dared to defy the government in a matter that could bring down harsh consequences on everyone, would you support him or her? How should a child respond when a parent makes a wrong decision or one motivated by fear instead of justice?
